I am a “handmade”gift giver! I tend to think that Christmas gifts are always better handmade and from the heart. I just love receiving handmade gifts and I also love giving gifts that I created. You know what else I love, like really really love? Functional gifts. I much prefer being able to give gifts that can be used, especially if they have multiple functions.
Not too long ago I made a pair of DIY candle holders, that are THE perfect multi-functional gift!
They were super simple ( and cheap) to make, ya know…my kind of DIY. I originally made them to use in my daughters nursery for tiny starter plants I was trying to root. However, after making them, I realized that they could be used as candle holders and so much more! I’ll give you some different ideas on how to use them at the end of the post, but first let buts talk about how to make them!
You will need:
Wood plank(s) approximately 12” L x 3.5” W x 1” thick
Glass containers (I used old crab dip containers) needs to have rim or lip so that it does not slip through your strapping. Mine were approx 3.5” tall and 2.5” diameter
Pencil
Screws
Drill/Impact
This DIY candle holder is really easy to make, just follow these instructions:
Just add your picture hangers to the back of the boards if you want to hang them and you are done!
The best thing about these DIY candle holders are that they don’t have to be used as candle holders. You can use them to store pens/pencils in an office or use them for starter plants if you have a green thumb/ They can also be used as a vase for wildflowers in the summer, and to store buttons, thimbles, and extras if you like to sew!

Jessica, I love your instructions illustration. Fun! Fun! I love giving handmade gifts too. I think these would be a fun gift for my daughter who has just bought her own home!
Thanks! I forgot to take pictures when I made it, so I had to improvise!
Oh my gosh what a great idea! I love that they are multi functional. And using the copper strapping elevates the look over using the silver hose clamps.
Thanks! I love copper, so it was perfect for me!
These are rustic and adorable! I think I’d use mine as a planter on the wall. Love your hand drawn instructions too!
They are great for starter plants!
Fabulous!! I can totally see a whole wall of these as craft storage!
Thank you! I plan on using these for my daughters craft corner for all her paint brushes and markers!
I love how versatile this gift is. The receiver could really choose to use it the way that works best for them.
For sure!
