Can we talk Christmas porch decor for a minute?

I don’t know why but porches are by far my favorite place for Christmas decorations. I love when I am visiting friends and family and their porches are all decked out with festive decorations! Christmas porch decor sets the mood for what you are about to walk into.  A warm house full of laughter and Christmas cheer with everyone you love. I am getting all warm and fuzzy just thinking about it!

In the past four years we have been living in our little fixer-upper, we have NEVER decorated our porch. No Christmas lights. No greenery. NOTHING. NADA. ZILCH. Unless you count the pine needles that get left behind from dragging our Christmas tree into the house.

But this year,  BY GOLLY, WE GOT CHRISTMAS PORCH DECOR!

Week three of the Deck the Halls Blog Hop theme is outdoor decor. Which presented the PERFECT reason to get my butt in gear and decorate our tiny little porch! And if I do say so myself, our Christmas porch decor looks amazing compared to the before. Sorry, I completely forgot to take before pictures!

Our Christmas porch decor cost me a whopping $14. The only things I purchased were three different types of ribbons, mini fake pine cones, and a wreath. ALL. ON. SALE.  The rest were things I had laying around the house.

The chairs were given to us a year or so ago from our neighbor and have been shoved to the corner of our porch ever since. We had a jute rug  rolled up on top of a cabinet in our basement that was the perfect size for our little porch. The terracotta pipe and tin bucket were all saved from a torn down house, and the wooden sled was given to me. My mom gave me the old skates and the tablecloth. Everything else was purchased or scavenged from the woods behind our house.

I started with the door. We have two doors that open onto our tiny postage stamp of a porch. I never understood the reasoning, but who knows what they were thinking back in 1901. I decided to cover the one you see when you walk directly onto our porch. This door leads directly into our living room and we rarely use it. I had an old Christmas tablecloth my mom gave me that worked perfectly to conceal the door. I simply folded the tablecloth to the size of the door and tacked it the frame with brad nails. I also secured it at the bottom so it didn’t blow in the wind.

I then hung my wooden Christmas garland I made for last weeks post on the two nails I used to secure the tablecloth.  To complete the look I hung a wreath I had gotten on sale at At Home in the middle .

Next, I cut some evergreen branches and fern leaves from the woods for my terracotta pipe planter. I found a small pot that fit perfectly into the top of the pipe and used this to hold my evergreen branches. The predrilled drain holes in the bottom the pot were perfect for holding the branches in place. After filling each drain hole with an evergreen branch, I filled in the rest of the branches to my satisfaction. I wasn’t looking for perfection, I wanted something a little wilder looking for a more rustic feel. Next, I hung my $1 fake pine cones on the branches and tied the ribbons around the terracotta pipe.

I arranged two chairs on either side of the planter and tied matching ribbon around the spindles in the back.

Taking the metal bucket, I tied matching ribbon around it and added kindling and a few sprigs of evergreen. I added two old candles and an old pair of black skates to the third chair, to complete the look.

Last, I added an old wooden sled my MIL had given me, in between the chairs for added interest. And just like that I was done!

It took me a total of three hours to pull everything together, including stopping at the store. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you have a babysitter for the day!

Now, I actually like my porch. I may just go make myself some hot chocolate, curl up on one of the chairs, and watch the snow fall!
