Now, as a mom of two small children who runs her business from home, time is not something I have a lot of. I love projects I can complete in under thirty minutes, because that is usually all the longer I can keep my youngest occupied with an activity. (If I am lucky) So, I came up with a quick wooden Christmas garland using tree rounds and items I already had on hand.

Materials needed for your wooden Christmas garland:

Fourteen 3-4” diameter tree rounds -varying sizes or all the same size; your choice.

Yarn-thicker is better

Acrylic paint

Tools needed:

Drill

⅜” drill bit

Sandpaper

Small paintbrush

Scissors

Pencil (optional)

Letter Stencils (optional)

Cut Rounds from tree branch

My husband had already cut a bunch of rounds from me for an wall art piece I have been envisioning. But guess what…it will take WAAYYY longer than 30 minutes to complete, so it has never gotten done. I decided I would put those rounds to good use and use them to create the wooden christmas garland for this week’s blog hop. Don’t live near a forest? Buy them HERE

Lightly sand

I lightly sanded the surface of the tree round so I had a smooth surface to paint my lettering.You don’t have to have a completely smooth surface, just knock off all the rough high points. I also had the cutest little helper who thought it was a blast to get sawdust everywhere!

Add Lettering

I chose to hand letter because I wanted a more “made with love” feel to the garland and I didn’t want to take the time to either make the stencils or go buy some. I decided to go basic and just letter “Merry Christmas”, but use whatever your heart desires. I did leave on round blank to separate the “Merry” and ” Christmas”, but in hindesight I probably would leave it out or add a small sprig of berries and greenery.  I used this acrylic paint in black because I had some that needed used up and it would look great with what I am planning for the rest of my Christmas decor. Hint hint… you’ll see what I am talking about next week!

Drill Holes

Now, you will need to drill some holes at the top of each round so you can string your  yarn through. The hubby helped out on this one because he like to play with power tools and I am not a fan. He used a ⅜” drill bit, which was the perfect size  for my yarn to pass through easily.

Cut your yarn for the garland

I cut my garland a little over three times longer than my rounds that spelled “Christmas”. This way I would have a little extra on the ends to tie a knot after I strung my rounds and have some extra fringe!

String your Rounds

Next, string your rounds onto the thick yarn. I originally was going to string the yarn through the rounds, but because my rounds were varying thicknesses it didn’t work well. I ended up making a yarn loop for each round and then stringing my long string through the loops. If the yarn is hard to string, just wrap one end with a bit of tape.

I also ended up cutting another piece of long yarn and wrapping it around the assembled garland. With one strand of yarn, it just looked too “janky” for me and you could see the knots of the loops on the rounds. Adding the extra piece of yarn hid the knots and made the strand look thicker and much nicer!

Add Decorations

This part is optional, You could add wooden beads, hang it up with garland, Christmas lights, or burlap. I left mine plain, because I feel less is best considering where I want to use my wooden Christmas garland.

In reality this garland took me an ENTIRE week to complete. But to be fair I could only work in five minute increments because I ended up with a sick child and have design clients to tend to. But combine all my increments together, the entire project only took about 30 minutes and ZERO dollars. Not bad eh?
